Do You Want To Survive? Think Like An Entrepreneur
From now on, you have to think like an Entrepreneur.
I can hear you saying, “But Bo, I’m an Employee!”
And you’re right. You may be an Employee in a bankor a call centeror the corner bakery down the street. But your entire world is changing. Even if you’re working for someone else, you still have to think like an Entrepreneur.
Think this way. If your name is Rudolph Reyes, then you’re the Chairman of the Board of Rudolph Reyes Personal Services Inc.
Why the shift?
Because I’ve met so many people who are miserable in their jobs and all they do is complain the whole day about their crummy boss and their crummy salary and their crummy company.
Listen.
Complaining accomplishes nothing.
Complaining is useless.
In the time of Moses, the Complainers got stuck in the desert for 40 years. They never set one foot on the Promised Land.
Instead of complaining, take charge!
God made you responsible for your career.
Unless you take responsibility, nothing happens.
Times Are Changing—Adapt Or Die
My Dad worked for the old San Miguel Corporation for 37 years.
During his prehistoric era, companies were large benevolent, loyal, doting families. The Owner was like Papa and all his employees were his kids for life. And people coasted along.
Let me give you an example. When Dad retired at the age of 65 as Assistant Vice President, the company gave him 100% health benefits until his dying breath. Can you imagine? Until he died at the age of 88, San Miguel paid for all of his medicines and hospital bills—which totaled to millions.
Question: Do you think San Miguel still does that sort of thing?
No way. They threw that policy away in the 80’s. In fact, no other company does that anymore.
I’m not pontificating or telling you what is right or wrong. I’m merely describing to you the very different world that you and I are living in today.
You live in a world where companies hire contractuals every 6 months and replace them again with a new batch. (I repeat. I’m not saying it’s right. I personally don’t like it. But that’s just how the world is operating right now.)
You live in a world where companies are shrinking via outsourcing. Your entire department can be axed tomorrow and the work given to companies in China or India or Davao or Cebu.
You live in a world where companies are bought or merged with other companies the way your sister changes her shoes. Every time it happens, you get (1) bumped up, (2) bumped down, or unfortunately, (3) bumped out.
In other words, you’re living in a world where only Entrepreneurs survive.
How Do You Think?
Like An Employee or An Entrepreneur?
Find out if you think like an Employee or an Entrepreneur.
If you think like an Entrepreneur, you just don’t understand what you do.
You understand why you do what you do.
Even if you’re just a messenger. You’re thinking of how to increase profits and lower down costs. You’re thinking of how to wow the customer and keep him for life.
Here are three examples of Employee Thinking:
“My salary is so small, its just enough for my daily transportation and lunch! I’ve been stuck in my position since Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan.”
Then why are you still working there?
Don’t say you have nowhere to go. When you say that, it becomes a reality for you.
Hey, I’m not asking you to resign. I’m asking you to look for a solution. Take responsibility. Make things happen!
Let me introduce you to a few options of the Entrepreneurial Mind…
Option #1: Get more training and get promoted
Option #2: Look for another job within the company where there’s more growth
Option #3: Become a Supplier to your company (My favorite! Look at what your company needs and create a business by supplying this product to them.)
Option #4: Keep your day job and start a business on the side
Option #5: Look for another job at another company
The choices are endless!
2. “My company is Prehistoric. It hasn’t developed me. I don’t receive any training!”
This is classic Employee thinking: They wait for their HR Department to tell them to attend seminars, arrange training programs, and supply them with books to read.
But Entrepreneurs take charge for their personal development. They keep reading. They keep learning. They keep innovating. They attend internet courses, correspondence courses, and night classes. They get the best mentors they can find. Because Entrepreneurs know that if they don’t innovate, they’ll become obsolete one day.
Question: This year, what have you been doing to develop yourself?
3. “Me, save? Nah. My company will give me a nice retirement package…”
Readers of my blog are young. Average age is 30. (Perhaps because the writer looks 30. Haha!) So talking about retirement seems strange, right?
Wrong.
Believe me, even if you’re 16, you should start building your retirement.
Here’s my harsh message: Don’t depend on your company to give you a retirement package. Even if they will give you one, trust me, it won’t be enough.
As I told you, my father retired at 65 and died at 88. That meant he lived for another 23 years. Do you think your one or two or three million will last for 23 years?
Don’t count on it. Perhaps three years. Perhaps five, tops. After that, you’ll be poor as a rat.
I urge you to take charge for your financial future. How? Build a separate retirement package on your own!
Here’s what you do. Starting today, set aside 20% of your income every month.
Next: Invest it. Don’t put it in the Bank. Learn how to use Bonds, Mutual Funds, Equity Funds, and Stocks. It’s not as difficult as you think it is. Grow!
Friend, be an Entrepreneur.
No matter what you do.
Take charge.
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

Hi BO!
I’ve just quit the corporate life 4 months ago, and I’m only 24. I work from home.. working for an Australian company (yes, they outsourced me).. and now I’m starting my home-based business apart from doing freelance Internet jobs.
All I must do now is to get started in investing in mutual funds. I’m looking for the best finds. Maybe you, and your readers can help out.
I totally agree with you about having an entrepreneurial mentality.
More power! God bless!
thanks bo for sharing
“I’m starting my home-based business apart from doing freelance Internet jobs.”
…may i ask what freelance Internet jobs i can go into?
thanks, garu
hi romela! can i ask for your help about that home based thing? if you reply i will post my email here if it is ok and about investing try mutual funds im also a newbie in that but its a long term investment and simple.
Hi,
I really want to learn how stocks and bonds work.
And Bro. Bo please tell us early if there’s seminar here in CEBU…ok…
Thanks….
Thank you for this message. The entrepreneur in me has livened up once again.
I’ll be graduating from a masters’ degree in accounting and now, i am resharpening all my skills and abilities for me to start my own research and consultancy firm. My further training would bank on my teaching and research work after graduation and from my selling skills that I acquired when I became a dealer of a clothing product to so many people.
On the side, I am also helping my mother manage the family business
I certainly want to make all these things happen.
Religion and business? Seriously? What a load of deception!
Why don’t you create one group for your `spreading the faith` activities? And another group devoted entirely for financial growth? After all, some people are atheists. Or are you biased against them?
And just as faith should not intermingle with money, the Church should lay its hands off the State. Let the people decide and believe what they think is appropriate for themselves, with or without religious upbringing.
very nice insight bro. bo, i hope a many will be inspired to think that way.
hi Queenie! hi Garu! for your inquiries, kindly email me at: romzkee@yahoo.com
@Queenie - I have a home-based biz that I’d like to share with you if you want.

Can you help me what should I do first to know more about it? Saan ako pwedeng mag surf? I will do appreciate it. Thanks.
Angie
Hi,
Tinamaan talaga ako sa messages mo. You’re right I mentally programed my subconscoius mind when I was in college that entrepreneurshhip is not for me, and so today I’m taking the consequences. i think I belong to the generation na takot na ang mga companies to directly hire the employees because of unions… I finished my degree 2 yrs ago..I got hired to work for a multinational company last year, and as what you have said, contractual basis only (labor union has caused their manufacturing operation wayback 1990s, kami tuloy na mga newlygrads ang nag-suffer) & I am employed under a search firm, not under that company…eto pa, days from now I’ll be loosing my job from my dream company because the department here was moved to China.. and sooner other departments will be moved to China also… Imagine that , timing talaga itong blog mo… I’ll keep up you advise…
thanks and sana marami pang ma-motivate through you.
thanks bo for always inspiring us to be better filipinos… being financially knowledgeable will eventually help our country…
@romela - i would like to know about your freelance internet job too… hope you don’t mind me sending you an email too… thanks!

about the mutual fund, me&my husband invested in alfm peso bond fund.. medyo mlaki nga lang initial investment pro based on performance in the last several years e di sila nhuhuli..
tsaka sila lng availble thru bank dito sa location ko sa mindoro, thru BPI.
–OUCH!!!
tinamaan ata ako sa mga sinabi mo Bro. Bo, pero I can’t help it. Complain pa rin ako ng complain. I’m praying na sana mabago ko agad tong attitude na to. It started when maramdaman ko na hindi na ako happy sa ginagawa ko. I’m working in a call center dito sa Makati. Early Januay this year I quit my job, sabi ko, di ko na talag to kaya, mababaliw na ako. But then when I went home sa province, nakita ko and na-realize ko kung gaano kahirap pag walang work especially ako lang talaga yung sumusuporta sa family ko. My dad is working pero di sapat. Ako gumagastos sa bahay, nagpapa aral ng kapatid, at the same time nagbabayad ng renta dito sa boarding house, and oh my daily expenses for food and transpo. Wala talagang natitira. Kaya ayun, ganun na lang ang complains ko. But then, just last February, I was hired in a Call center again. This time, di masyadong mahirap yung work. Pero ganun pa rin, I’m unhappy, kapag papasok na sa work, gusto ko na lang matulog, gusto ko restday lagi. hehehe
I”m thinking to try na mag apply as Medical Representative, since BS Biology naman yung tinapos ko, and almost all my classmates in college are all med reps and take note, successful and most of all happy sila sa work nila. Pero natatakot naman ko, kasi if I resigned na hindi ko pa sure kung makakapasok talaga ako, isa itong disaster.
Well… I hope mahanap ko kung ano talaga yung magpapasaya sakin,I’m just 22, turning 23 this December pero feeling ko I’m older than my age na for all the responsibilities and “problems” na nararanasan ko both financially and emotionally.
Pls pray for me bros and sis. I know naman na makakayanan ko to, God is always there for me.
by the way… Romela, I’d like to know more dun sa biz mo. Can I email you also?
thanx much!…
May God bless us all!!!
Hi Bo,
Thank you for continuously inspiring us.
You are precisely correct on how to survive as an entrepreneur.
Before we were your typical employee…. but after my wife and I started a food stand business. The ideas just coudn’t stop from coming in….
We are both working for a MNC, but we are doing the business on the side because we know that this will eventually become a financial windfall for us.
We are eager to open a new branch.
Again thanks for inspiring us always.

Hi Mr. Boo, nice article. You’re right! God Bless Us!
I LOVE THIS POST! very timely bro. Bo! god is really GOOD!!!!
true enough for bro. bo. i believe in the saying that if you dont love your job everything follows.meaning everything will go wrong because you started wrong or in a wrong attitude, right? so no matter what job you have yu have to learn to love it. and most of all put God in everything you do. Thanks Bro. Bo for the inspiration.
hi, bo, the inspiration of yours inspires me. you are right all the time… uhmmm where did you get those good ideas??? Hehehe…
I also follow your advice Bo from the start. I have been reading books for equipping myself. to renew my mind… to motivate myself to work hard for a living and for my future.
See. I am thinking like an Entrepreneur already!!!
I remembered I have a career psychology test when I was in college. The result of the test is I am an entrepreneur.
hi romela, all -
just like the others, after 10 yrs in my last job, i was out just last july 15th. am just finalising some papers in the office to complete my clearance and get my final pay & totally off - - - am very much interested about your posted idea, expect my email very soon - - - i have lots of queries though i hope you could get back to me the soonest i post mine . . . many thanx & best regards . . . ad majorem dei gloriam, Butsch
There are a lot of mutual funds, if in case you live in Bulacan area, there’s Praxis Fides Mutual Benefit Association Inc. Actually, its like “paluwagan” wherein you give certain amount per month for a period of usually 5-20 years, then you get your money plus interest earned upon maturity and it comes with an insurance (should anything bad happened to you while the plan is active). Mas malaki ang interest compared sa bank, ranging from 10%-18% per annum sila (so far). another thing is that they lend money to members at a minimal interest rate (even lower to that of any commercial bank). I actually borrowed money from them to start my own business. Maagan bayaran kasi, monthly and mode ng payment and payable ng 6, 12 or 24 months whichever you prefer.
hi bo, thanks for the inspiring article.. just like the others from cebu, we\’re looking forward to your seminars…. been looking for reliable companies with mutual funds but more important is i still need to learn this.. if there\’s anybody you can recommend here in cebu.. thanks… keep the inspiring articles coming…
This is my first time posting hear. I’ve been reading your article for a while now and I wanted to thank you for all the inspiring articles. I had tried to invest before but all failed. I’ve invested in networking companies but I always get burned out. Now im working in an international insurance company with insurance and investments. But i always get rejected from so many people. And sometimes I get bored on my job because of all those rejections. but i know that those rejections will help me learn on how to be strong. Just recently i started an eloading business and it is fun. In the future I am planning to have my own apartment business because I’ve read the book “think rich pinoy” so many times and it help me realize that being an employee is not the answer to be financially free. I hope bro. bo you can give me some advice. Thanx again.
Hi…
Thanks again Brother Bo for inspiring and teaching us on how to improve our selves in wide range of aspect.
Im looking forward to be part of your truly rich seminars.
God bless…

Thanks for the inspiration!
God Bless!
hi bro bo! thank you for opening our minds to the real world. I’ve been a bank employee for almost 15 yrs and my husband and I are planning to start a new business before the year ends.
ms. romela, i’m also interested in your home based biz, can i join too?
Everyone sounds very optimistic about making it big and being very successful. The truth, It will very very very hard and will take a very very very long time.

Wow, this article is really related to my blog site entitled “Aspiring Entrepreneur” - The Journey of an Employee Towards Becoming a Successful Entrepreneur.
Helo Kuya Bo,
I’ve been reading your articles for quite a long time and they are really inspiring. It helps a lot. I’m an OFW, I just came back from vacation this August. What strikes me most is the article I read two years ago, it’s not from the internet but from a an article posted in the FX window. I find it interesting, in fact I read it take down notes, of course pasimple lang, para di halata… I read there about saving money etc… and I said I should apply it. But then, after two years of my first contract, still I have not made it. Di naman talaga walang naipon, nakabayad nman ng utang, may nakuha rin kami lupa, but I found planning is not enough.
I’m glad we found img this vacation shared to us by a friend in our church and we joined. There I remember what I read two years ago before I go abroad. And I’m happy to know that you’re also one of them. I now understand it more clearer. That’s what we need to especially, OFW.
Thanks, God bless & more power!
Bo , I am 24 . I started realizing what you have said about investing and stuff just these past few months,..When I first learn about your blogs, I kept on reading all of it every night. Actually, I badly needed your help, me and my other two friends are agreed to invest our sayings for are future . I told them about your idea of mutual funds, stocks, etc. but we just don’t know how to do it , where to begin. I hope you could help us and probably give us advice on how to start investing…
