Do You Spend Enough Time With Your Kids?

This morning, I biked with my boys around our little village.

More accurately, Francis rode his bike and Bene rode his scooter. They flew around the block like young Arabian Racehorses. Me? I was on my sandaled feet chasing (and panting) after them. So I also felt like a horse too, but I was like those aging ones that pulled Karitellas in Quiapo and Intramuros.

But I loved it.   I got sunlight. I got exercise. I got fresh air. Most importantly, I got lots of love. Because I was spending time with the boys. Gosh, what else can I ask for? (To be continued below)

After I write this blog, I’ll join the brood downstairs.   I’ll slip in a VCD of Jurasic Park in our player. My wife Marowe is now cooking buttered popcorn and she’ll give each of us a giant bowl. The boys will sit on the floor and my wife and I will plop on the couch behind them. While we munch popcorn, we’ll see dinosaurs munch people. (Hmm, maybe we should watch something else…)

Here are a few other favorite things we do together:

·        I doodle with the little guys. Francis loves to draw roller coasters and Bene loves to draw fun caricatures of the family.

·        I sit on the floor and play cars, planes, and trains with them—whatever their flavor of the month is.

·        I play 15 minutes of video games with Bene everyday. (We only allow him to play for 30 minutes a day.) Obviously, he beats me every single time.

·        I read books to them, especially before sleeping. This is something they both love. Or sometimes we just make up stories together out of thin air.

People ask me, “How do you get the time to do all these?”

Easy. I don’t do certain things. Like I don’t watch TV. And I don’t surf the net for entertainment.

Friends, do you spend enough time with your kids?

Share to the world your activities by writing at the comments below. Inspire others.   Here’s my belief: When parents spend time with their kids, we solve a lot of problems in the world.

          May your dreams come true,

  2. oh yes we do spend time with our kids in different ways… that’s what my blog is all about (http://moonlight-mom.blogspot.com). luckily in IT, we work flexy (not graveyard, mind you). our schedules allow us to share as much time as we can with our 3 boys aged 15, 12 and 5

  3. Hi! :-) I admire you sir Bo and I really love your articles, but I just would like to bring up something that’s been bothering me. Something negative actually. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but why is your site (the homepage particularly) very much similar to that of Steve Pavlina’s? If you do not know him, you might like to visit his own website and see for yourself what I am talking about here. It’s http://stevepavlina.com. So, there. Thanks and good day!!! :-)

  4. Hi, Bo!

This is a nice post. My kids are my number 1 priority. I just recently resigned from my full time work because I have felt I am missing a lot of their growing up years. I have decided to work from home and i have never regretted a single moment of it. Thanks for sharing this and for being always an inspiration.

    Regards!

  5. i love that last line.. “When parents spend time with their kids, we solve a lot of problems in the world.” oh so true! i hope parents nowadays realize that. thank you for this post. i always read your blogs but this is one of the rare times that i’m writing a reply.

  6. yes i do agree, it’s really vital to spend time with our kids. Mine is just simply sitting down with her in the floor and play dough, we have fun doing it. Reading before bedtime is also wonderful, my daughter is now 2 -year old and it so funny when she reads book by herself, she just mumble different words with different intonations trying to imitate me.. i even recorded it and set as my ringing tone. :-) so funny..

  7. hi brother Bo, as a working mom it was really so difficult to balance my schedule but I made it a point that though I spent most of days and hours a day at work at the end of the day or during weekends I spent the whole time with my son. I am really wishing and praying hard that my husband find a better paying job so that i need not go to work anymore (leaving our son behind really breaks my heart). Our son Miguel is 30 months old now and he is growing so fast and so wise that is why I dont want to miss all his adventures all the way.

  8. hi kuya bo!!! me and my siblings grew up with both parents working so that they can provide for us financially.. but eventhough they’re busy with work.. they made sure that we grew up knowing that they love us and that they have time for us..

our dad would spend his mornings teaching us how to ride a bike and our mom would spend her free time cooking and talking to us…

we may not be a perfect family.. problems and stuffs.. but what we have is perfect for us.. me and my sibs are grateful for having them as our parents..

no matter how busy we are.. we have to make an effort to our time and to show our love.. because a simple show of affection would last for a lifetime..
