Nothing Just Happens

I heard this message from T.D. Jakes, and I loved it so much, I’d like to share it with you.

Let me start with a beautiful Bible story.

One day, a married couple named Elimelech and Naomi were living in Bethlehem. And they were blessed with two sons.

But when famine struck the land, they had to migrate. Just like Filipinos today, Naomi and Elimelech went abroad to look for a better life.

But in that land, tragedy happened.  First, Naomi’s husband Elimelech died. Her two sons married Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah. And just in case you’re asking, no, Orpah didn’t have an ancient TV show…

And then tragedy struck again because Naomi’s two sons also died. So Naomi was left with her two daughter-in-laws, Ruth and Orpah. In ancient times, a widow doesn’t inherit a single cent from her dead husband. So Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah became dirt poor. What can be worse than three widows living together in poverty?

That was when Naomi decided to go back to Bethlehem and become a Balikbayan. But a very poor, destitute, impoverished Balikbayan. And she told Ruth and Orpah to leave her and go back to their families—because they had no hope with her.

The three of them cried together—and after much tears, Orpah decided to walk away. But Ruth decided to stay with Naomi. And she said, “Wherever you go, I shall go; Where you die, I shall die; Your people will be my people; And your God will be my God too.” She commits herself to care for her mother-in-law. And so both of them went back to Bethlehem.

In Bethlehem, Ruth looks for food. Out of the many lands there, she chooses to “glean” from the land of a certain Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s husband. (Gleaning was a charitable practice in ancient Israel where landowners didn’t harvest everything from their land, but left some leftovers, so that the poor people can gather these leftovers for themselves.)

And this is where the miracle happens…

And as it happened, she found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, the relative of her father-in-law, Elimelech. Then Boaz asked his foreman, “Who is that young woman over there? Who does she belong to?” (Ruth 2:3, 5)

It says that Ruth “just happened” to be gleaning on the land of Boaz. Like it was a stroke of luck. A happy coincidence. A random chance. An unplanned accident.

But did this really “just happen”? If you read until the end of the story, it says that the Boaz marries Ruth! And Ruth the Beggar becomes Ruth the Owner.

Here’s the truth: Nothing Just Happens. Because God had something to do with it. This was Divine Orchestration. The Heavenly Conductor arranged, maneuvered, and engineered various circumstances to position Ruth to harvest in this specific plot of land, which was her place of destiny.

I believe God is doing the exact same thing in your life.

Say it after me, “Nothing just happens.”

When you feel discouraged by your current situation, when you feel that things aren’t going your way, when you find yourself caught in a quagmire of opposition, and people reject you, declare that “Nothing Just Happens!”

God Determines Your Steps

The Bible says, We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. (Proverbs 16:9).

She was begging in the land of Boaz. This was her place of poverty. But God saw the future and knew that this place of poverty was actually her place of destiny. Ruth the Beggar became Ruth the Owner! Ruth, the mendicant, became Ruth, the millionaire.

Right now, you may be in a place of poverty. I declare it now to be your place of prosperity. You may be in a place of anguish. I declare it now to be your place of abundance. You may be in a place of defeat. I now declare it as your place of destiny. Your physical surroundings may be ordinary to your eyes, but behind the curtains of the physical realm, God is doing something extraordinary in your favor. Declare that God is bringing you to your place of destiny because “Nothing Just Happens”.

Think of the most painful experience in your life and shout, Nothing just happens! Think of the people that have abandoned you and shout, Nothing just happens! Think of the anguish that you went through and shout, Nothing just happens!”

When the winds are strong, the clouds are dark, the waves are high, shout, Nothing just happens! When there’s no food on your table, no money in your pocket, no friends on your side, shout, nothing just happens! When your prayers aren’t answered, when your dreams aren’t happening, and when your miracles aren’t flowing—Nothing just happens!

May your dreams come true,

Bo Sanchez

  1. Thank you so much Bro. Bo for this another inspiring article. You’re really a big blessing from God. Because of your blogs and teachings, I’m now slowly improving myself in all areas of my life.

I am currently moving on from a very painful break up. The man that I wanted to marry left me. But I understand him and I already forgiven him. Yes, it’s very hard to admit that we will not be together forever but I trust God that he has a better man for me and I can say that NOTHING JUST HAPPENS. 😀

Thanks and may you continue to be a blessing to us.

  2. life is a struggle.. somedays i wake up with heavy load and i wish we would never wake up until all my problems are solved by itself… haha.. but i knew it would never happen.. but in the darkness of my life there is a little light that reminds me to go on… well, that lights become a little bit brighter now.. 11. Hi Bro. Bo,

just when i am seeing things not happening in my life and a lot of things just go down the drain, was thinking that I must be hearing God wrong. Did a lot of things to change my lot in life, but I always found myself still where I am today. I admit I am feeling depressed and tired of waiting for “God’s direction” and did what I can do. But this article was an encouragement. I am not lazy, that’s why I find it hard to be in a bad situation not doing anything. Now I’ll stay calm— because nothing just happens.

    Thanks for a great article!

  12. Every Monday morning, I look forward into reading a new blog. Like some of us, I dread Monday as it’s a working day again. But I think about going to work and reading your blog and I know I will be inspired when I do. Thank you Brother Bo, and Nothing Just happens. you’re meant to guide me. Thanks much. 😀

  15. “Nothing just happens.” How timely and appropriate! Thank you once again, Bro. Bo, for a very inspiring article and truly God-sent message. Yes, perhaps this sums up what God has been trying to tell me all these years. In spite of the trials and discouragements, “nothing just happens.” Problem is, I most often ignore or misread the message behind these trials. Please do include me in your prayers, Bro. Bo, that I may have the courage and the faith to move on and face life’s challenges. More power to your noble work and ministry! God bless!

  16. I really needed to hear this message today. Looking back in my life, I know this to be true. Thanks Brother Bo for this. Nothing just happens because there is a reason behind every event in our lives.

    God bless.

  17. I look back when times we were down, then I ask my wife how did we do that? My wife answered, God was there for us.

You are right Bo. Nothing just happens. Everything happens for a purpose, everything happens for a reasons, though that reason we do not know yet.

  18. “Nothing just Happens!” Amen!

Just have faith in everything, in all God’s plan to our lives… Our duty is just to live righteously with virtue, from all the struggles and doubts… let us remain focused with our FAITH to the Lord and all will be in place. If it’s for us to give a little suffering to get a big Blessing, THY WILL BE DONE! And if our sufferings will be awakening to others, THY WILL BE DONE!

  19. Amen! Nothing just happens. Everything has its own reason and purpose. Thank you so much, Brother Bo, for making me realize this more clearly. Indeed! God has His own reason why things happen. Thank you, Lord, for everything!

I’ve been down since yesterday with sadness, confusion & frustration over my family problems. In frustration, I asked God why nothing seem to progress? Why I can’t seem to move pass the pits that I’m in? Despite the pain i feel, I believe that He is working on my life, that he has wonderful plans for me & my children.
This is my place of prosperity & abundance. Nothing Just Happens! praise God.

  25. Thank you Bro. Bo for this life changing article.

It’s very timely from where I am at right now. The whole family is awaiting a very important decision that would impact our family’s future. But as the days progressed, I become tensed and stressed. There are tiny obstacles meet but I all lift them up to God. I know that this is part of God’s plan… And that at the end of the day, God will still lead us to our destiny. I should not lose my FAITH and focus.

    Have a blessed Monday everyone.

  29. This is the essensce of what I’ve been thinking of since yesterday when I’ve read an article and saw the interviews with Han-sol, the grandson of Kim Jong Il from his banished first born son because he was considered an embarassment. The fruit of this banishment is I believe what will save North Korea. Nothing just happens!

  30. Very timely, it is true that “nothing just happens” because everything happens in God’s perfect plan. I’m in the current situation that I cannot even manage what to think and do first that my head is filled with so many things, but I can feel that GOD is comforting me through the love and care that I am receiving from my friends around.

God has so many plans in our lives, let him be the center of it. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME.

May God Bless You and Your Family always Bro. Bo.

  54. Hi Bro. Bo!

Thank you for your message. I love your message for today. Like many others, I had been under many difficult situations in my life. My father left me and my mother after I just turned 1. My stepfather was not very kind to me while I was growing up and made sexual passes on me. I lived in scarcity and was always at the mercy of my mother’s brothers and sisters. During college, I was usually very problematic during enrollment because I have no money to pay for my fees. But never did I loose hope Bo. I cried at night and poured my anguish to Jesus. And I believe Bo that I was able to get through all of those because God is always with me. He never let me down. Thank you Bo for your wonderful message and may it touch those people who are in pain right now.

  55. I like the topics you bring in, Bro. Bo, and admire your way of interpreting these events taken from the Bible, applying them in the Filipino way of life. In line with all these, I also have my thoughts… that any misfortune that happens in life is always hard to accept/understand. It always takes time to go through a process of healing. It’s very human to get impatient and loose one’s control over emotions. But taking Ruth’s positive attitude nothing is impossible. She also acted on her decision and not just waited to what most people think is their fate. No wonder, she also attracted the interest of Boaz and this brought to “nothing just happens”!

  56. Great Job Bro. Bo..
God use you as instrument of blessings on us..

Thanks and God Bless you Bro. ^__^

  57. Amen and Amen!

  58. Thank you Bo for this very inspiring article. My marriage is on the rocks and my husband just left for a job abroad without really making me a part of his decision. He said that it is for our kids’ future, for them to be able to finish college. But it breaks my heart to see them cry for losing their Dad this way. My husband and I had an ideal first 15 years of marriage and that was what my 2 girls witnessed growing up. They are 16 & 14 now. After that blissful 15 years, everything became a nightmare & to this day, I really don’t understand what my husband is up to. He just keeps telling me that he needs space and it’s been 2 years now. And what more, he decides to leave… Although he keeps telling me and the kids that, everything is going to be okay…

After I’ve read your article, I say to myself now that “NOTHING JUST HAPPENS!” and that God has bigger plans for us that our future will brighter than our past.

Thank you Bo & more power to you. God bless you & your family.

  59. […] Perhaps you too have asked during times of tribulation, “Why is this happening to me?” I just received this excellent article from Bo Sanchez, a pastor/writer located in the Philippines who blogs at . I’ll let the words speak for themselves: Nothing Just Happens […]

  60. If all reading materials are written in the way you write all your articles even the most boring stories become lively.
Yes Bro. Bo Nothing Just Happens – but, one must still have the faith burning in his heart. One must still listen where his calling is and strive to find his real place. As Ruth said your God will be my God. Nothing Just Happens because there is this one God who leads us thru.
Thanks for inspiring us thru your writings.
    God bless you always.

  61. Yesterday, I talked to my boyfriend and confirmed that it was my phisical appearance made him to realize that he is not happy with me, It was really PAINFUL. 68. i agree. 5 yrs ago my grandpa died in an accident. that time it was so painful to us for my mom has no job, she cant walk (had her hip replacement), and my dad left her when I was young- it was my grandpa who provide all of our needs incl paying my tuition fees. i felt that my world broke apart.

yrs after I met Jesus Christ. I realize that i wasnt depending God but I was depending on my grandpa. I realize that we should make Jesus Christ as our firm foundation. now, I can say that Gid provided all of our needs. It aint easy but I learn the lesson the hard way, after all God will discipline those He love and all things worked together for good for those who love God.

i can relate with this story.

  69. Hi Bro. Bo!

If we look back, we were able to overcome those difficult times. It was this time of difficulties that HE carried us when we thought things were impossible to overcome. We just have to keep that Faith in him burning. Live life the way He wanted it to be, Pray hard and Believe that miracles do happen everyday. He has a purpose of each of us, we just have to listen.
