Have you ever prayed, “Lord, help me win the Lotto!”?

Been there, done that.

When I was a teen missionary, I was walking on the street when I saw an old woman selling sweepstakes.  The prize was P10 Million.  At that time, Light of Jesus Family was eyeing to buy a piece of property for our community center worth P5 Million.

I prayed, “Lord, I’ll buy this sweepstake ticket to help this old woman.  If you make me win, I’ll donate half of my earnings to the ministry.”

Bribing God wasn’t beneath me.

Do you know what happened? Nothing.

Today, I thank God that nothing happened. Because if I won, I would have robbed myself of the inner growth that came from working hard for the money.

Regularly, I receive requests for prayer from people buried in debt and who ask me to pray that they win the LOTTO.  In their desperation, they believe it’s their only hope.  They want to get out of debt by magic.

But that kind of magical thinking will dig them even deeper into debt.

I see this all the time.

Let me tell you a classic story: Sam has huge debts from 13 private creditors, all charging high interests.  It’s causing him ulcers and sleepless nights.

One day, he finds a bank that will give him a low-interest loan to pay off all his debts.  He’s beside himself with joy.  Once he received the loan, he pays all his debts.  He’s debt-free!  He felt so happy.  For awhile, at least.  Because he didn’t unlearn old habits or learned new ones.  He didn’t learn how to discipline his expenses or learned how to earn extra income.  Three months later, Sam has accumulated new debt from the same private creditors PLUS the bank loan he’s paying.

He’s now worse off than three months ago.

To those in debt and praying for a miracle, I tell them, “God doesn’t just want to pay your debt, God wants to change your life.”

I’ve seen many friends escape the prison of debt.

It’s possible.

To get out, you’ve got to do a lot of work for a few years:

1) Discipline your expenses by simplifying your lifestyle;

2) negotiate your monthly payments with creditors to decrease interest or bring it down to zero (Yep, it happens);

3) increase your income by working part-time or selling something and;

4) set aside as much as you can to pay off your debts every month.  You need to unlearn bad habits and learn new ones, but in due time, you’ll achieve zero debt.

But your greatest victory isn’t paying your debts but changing your heart.

God is after your maturity.

And magic doesn’t make you mature.

We’ve Seen Thousands Grow

Through our organization, TrulyRichClub, we’ve helped thousands gain financial freedom. Our mission is to “help good people become rich”.  While doing so, one thing that I teach our members is stop praying to God for money only.  May I make this bold declaration to you?  God doesn’t just want to give money; He wants to give you the ability to make money.  That’s what you pray for.

You must believe He has already given you everything you need to make money.  You just need to discover, develop, and deliver.  The Bible says, But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth(Deuteronomy 8:18 NIV)
