Make Your Joy Appointments!
Two weeks ago, I asked you to make your Joy List. (And man, I had fun reading your Joy Lists! Awesome.)
Today, I’ll be asking you to take the next step: Make Joy Appointments.
Writing your Joy List is only the start. Unless you make Joy Appointments, nothing much will happen. It will be like everyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions. We know what happens to that.
If you need to be reminded, look at the expensive exercise equipment lying somewhere in your house, collecting dust. Did you know that 97% of all exercise equipment end up this way?
Friends, here are the 5 Steps to filling your life with more joy.
Step #1: Write your Joy List
If you haven’t made your Joy List yet, I urge you to do it now. Define what makes you happy. Define what you love. Define what makes you peaceful, whole, fulfilled, excited, and happy. (Please read my previous article, “What Is Your Joy List?”)
Step #2: Choose one item in your Joy List
Don’t try to do them all of them at the same time—or you’ll get overwhelmed. Start with one item first! Check what you feel is the most important activity that gives you the most joy. It’s an activity that you want more of in your life. It could be playing time with your kids, or having solo time with God, or curling up on the couch for some reading time. The choice is yours.
Step #3: Make a Joy Appointment in your weekly or monthly calendar
Invest in your joy! Write this activity in your calendar as a regular item in your week. For example, when I got married 10 years go, I wanted to date the greatest girl of my galaxy once a week. And so for the past 10 years, I’ve been faithful to this promise. How? Easy. I put it on a specific day and time of the week. So I don’t forget. It’s that simple. (I won’t tell you what day that is. Here’s the reason why: I get hundreds of invitations to speak every month. And I don’t want people to tell me, “Bo, we picked this day because we know it’s your date night with your wife. Just this once, please speak to our group?” The answer is still No.) Unless I’m out of the country or World War III breaks out, I won’t miss my date night with my wife. She’s my joy.
Step #4: Choose a second Joy and make another Joy Appointment
When the first activity you chose is already consistent—like you’ve done it for three times already—go back to your Joy List. Check a second item that’s important to you. Repeat: This is something you want to have more in your life. Make this a Joy Appointment too. Regularize it in your weekly or monthly calendar. Make it immovable.
Step #5: Repeat the Process
Get a third item from your Joy List. And a fourth. And a fifth. Believe me, after three to six months, you won’t recognize yourself. You want to pinch yourself and say, “Is this me? Is this my life? Gosh, I’m filled with so much joy!”
Remember: If you don’t determine what you’ll do in your week, others will do that for you. The TV producers would want you to watch TV. The food advertisers would want you to keep eating their food. The video game makers would want you to keep playing their games.
Define your joy.
And do it.
— 0 —
Okay, you’re turn. In the comments section below, write down the one thing in your Joy List that you’ll make a Joy Appointment. Write down the day, date, and time you’ll make it happen!
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

i’d enjoy reading your blog..and haha its A JOY for me, that i’d be the first one (i think) to leave a comment on your blog about joy appointments….hmm its time to have an APPOINTMENT with myself..
godbless Bro. Bo!
—– My Joy Appointments —–
Wow Bro Bo this is actually Amazing. After I wrote my Joy list didn’t realize that everything’s happening at the moment and still coming. Hi readers if you read my Joy list last post you can follow.
On my No. 1 Joy list I am not only reaching out my friends through phone calls but oh boy! I am going to see my friends, relatives, family and community and spend time with all of them. Note: I’m here in South Africa and I will be having my Philippine vacation (after 3 years) on well let say December and I’m not gonna tell you the exact date and for how long hehehe. Once I arrived you’ll know that.
On my No. 2 Recently I borrowed my sister’s DVD for simply guitar so I can practice it again but oh swell can’t manage my time. But it will be still on my list.
On my No. 3 Looking at the stunning view of South Africa is not enough. I am exploring Cape Town and go for hiking, wine tasting, and more to come. You can visit my website for other getaway. http://www.friendster.com/travellingpants
On my No. 4 I am thankful to God for blessing me that I manage to help my cousin finish his 4th year High School and now he is studying Architecture in college. Not only in financial but I know I can inspire other people here and in the Philippines.
No. 5 Joy list is related to no. 1. After 3 years I will see all of them or maybe not all but I believe since then they are successful in their chosen field and life at present. On the other hand, I’m organizing my high school classmate batch to have an early Christmas get together. Yes after how many years we will meet again.
I love my No. 6 A couple of weeks ago I’ve read this article that the winner and a finalist (SYTYCD Season 3) of the popular Dance show in America is coming to South Africa on September and there will be a classes, interviews and mingle with them during that event. I signed up for the 2-day classes and yes I will meet them and other dancers and choreographer around here. In addition I’ve been attending Dance classes since last year 2007 here in my place and we have rehearsals for the upcoming Spring break show on October for 3 consecutive nights. Wow cool! After those some moments sort of “not challenging” times, “unsatisfaction” in classes thinking to drop this one and not to come anymore hehehe. Finally it will be worthwhile.
For my No. 7 Believe me I am planning my Calendar from August to end of this year and once I get back from the Philippines. Wow I have a lot of things going on and that includes travelling and meeting people. And still to come another opportunity overseas that I am praying for.
Ehem my No. 8 could be connected to no. 7 that somewhere in between travelling and exploring I will meet my partner in life hahaha. Yeah if you attend seminar of Bro. Bo’s “How To Find Your 1 true Love” you will know more. Actually I don’t even have book of that. I just watch a bit of information from Preacher’s in Blue Jeans episodes and got an idea. (do I get any reward for promoting hahaha, kidding).
Ok No. 9 I know how busy Bro. Bo is and the K-ppreacher’s but I will find a way to meet them. Yeah maybe in the Feast for the 1st time. And I know you can read my post here, fantastic!!! Thanks in advance.
And my No. 10 I am enjoying my “Single” life at the moment and still great things and opportunities will come on my way for In God’s outstretch arm All Things Are possible.
Cheers!
My joy is with my family. To spend more time with my husband, children and grandchildren.
My joy wish is to be able to travel abroad with them., but it might just be a ‘wishfull thinking’ as i cannot afford to treat them.
I wish i would win the Premyo Sa Recibo, which I have been doing it.
My joy is when I have paid all my debts.
My joy is when i could make everyone happy.esp. those who have less.
My joy is thinking the blessing God has showered us in different ways.
I appreciate Bo’s being a part of my daily existence, He helps me to be connected with God everyday by reading his emails to me.
Thank you Bo for being a part of my life.
My list joy appoitment is when I can share what I have to others.

Wow, Kuya Bo, this is truly an invigorating joyous post! ^^
As of the moment, I’m enjoying myself more than I did a few years ago with too much work. I date myself more and I recently enjoyed the habit of going to the movies alone.
I also realized that I have already fulfilled my dream in writing and photography through blogging. (I’m the one who applied for a writing post in Kerygma. Hehe. Thanks for the redirection btw. ^^) I’m back as a programmer again and realizing that I don’t need to give up that job in order to fulfill my other dreams.
Perhaps like your mom, I’ve already written my joy list in my heart.. and that’s to be happy with what life brings. I always choose to be happy.
Thanks again, Kuya Bo. I know you really read this and more power to you and your team.
hi bro. bo, here’s my joy list ; hearing mass daily as long as situation permits, prepare my family’s meals, write my daily haiku entries even if it doesn’t win, ( it does sometimes ) it’s my joy, going to the movies q weekend with my husband, window shopping but ending up buying something anyway, eat outside , serving in my parish ministry, visit my daughter who’s out of state, taking care of my patients and simply spending quality time with my family.
that’s it, so simple, yet it makes me happy !
thanks so much bro. bo.
God bless you and your lovely family!
My joys: sharing my blessings to people, sharing God’s Word, becoming a shining LIGHT to people, making them laugh and enjoy the ride of life with the LORD! Hallelluia!
every wednesday…9 -11pm - a warm cup of coffee to match with a must-read book.
Hi Bro. Bo,
Before having the chance to read your blog today, I had a terrible argument with my partner. It seems that we cannot make our ends meet with our means. Worst, he’s angst with his work are growing seriously.
I am at the point of trying hard, really trying hard to have a time with my spiritual life. I must confess Bro. Bo, I believe I’m still the weakest, and hearing my partner’s complaints abt his life, our life, I can be easily swayed forgetting my promise to Him and to myself…
So can you believe that just after quarelling with him, here I am leaving a comment. Right now my mind, to be honest, is still empty. I just want to express how amazing God really works His way…
Thank you Lord, for not turning your back, even I did many times, and still doing…
Thank you Bro. Bo for being His instrument…
Please don’t get tired, even I do easily, it helps a lot.
God Bless, I promise to come back to this page and I’ll leave more…
“he’s angst…”
his angst… ^^
A joyful moment occurs when I get to spend time with my 94-year old grandmother. Just last Saturday, she was playing a game of mahjong with other older relatives when I arrived from work to visit her. She took a break from playing, sat down with me at the dining table and accompanied me while I ate. She had trouble hearing me and asked the same questions (stated in different sentences), but I always feel so grateful just to be with her.
The first thing in my JOY LIST is to attend the FEAST every sunday. It always gives me joy everytime I attend the sessions and meet the friends I got to meet there. It’s not just a promise that I make to myself but my commitment to God for giving me so much strenght through all difficulties as well as abundant blessings.Praise God.
hi bo!
thanks so much for your inspiring articles in `soulfood’! you’ve never failed to inspire and open my eyes to new possibilities, new directions and realizations in my ordinary life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, etc. etc. thanks for being a true instrument of God to many. No. 1 in my joylist is to be able to attend the kerygma feast. and i’m going to do it this coming Sunday, 24 August. i’ve been wanting to take my eldest son’s family there together with my grandchildren, but so many things had come up at home and elsewhere which prevented us from going. so this coming Sunday, we’ll make it a point to be there! God bless you and your family and your wonderful ministry!

hi kuya bo,
I wish GOD make this possible for me.
salamat po kuya sa paalala na time ko namang bigyan pansin ang aking sarili.
GOD BLESS PO
Hi Bo!!
Thank you so much for all your inspiring words. You are God’s instrument to bring His love on earth. I always pray for you and your community. God bless you and your family. Please help me pray for my family. Thanks.

Hi Bro. Bo,
I`ve been here in Saudi for almost 17 yrs with my family,my husband is working as a proj.eng. in Tetra Pak.Our only daughter is studying here in one of the Phil.sch.
i`m a nurse but at the moment I`m not working.Eto nasa bahay lang, dakilang maybahay.
My joy list sana is to go to a church kaso wala namang church dito.kaya ang wish ko sana is to go somewhere na may church then ang happy ending ay we as family ay ma experience sana namin yung magsimba every sunday hindi lang sa pilipinas na one month lang kami na nag sstay to see our relatives, very limited time.
I`m happy na nakita ko ang website nyo.blessing po kayo sa akin.
thank you po,and more power.
Hi Bo,
It’s my first time to write a comment here, and its also my first time to attend the Feast last sunday. I can say its truly a Feast. Its a wonderful celebration. And I also got a chance to buy a book and have it signed by my favorite author, you. Thanks again! Isn’t it one of my Joy list? Yes, I think so. And I’ve done it. You know, I’ve been planning to attend the Feast for almost a year now and it just happened last Sunday. Thanks to my friend that drag me there. Haha…
But I think, first in my joy list is to spend time with my sweet Jesus. That’s first on my list. I want to go to the blessed sacrament everyday and pray and spend time with my savior. I believe I should start my Joy List with the one that’s truly the source of my happiness. I’ll start this week. I’ll drop by to the blessed sacrament before going to office. Wake up early, so I’ll get a chance to attend the mass at 7am and then go to the Blessed Sacrament after the mass. Actually, I’ve been doing this before but I’ve stopped. I’ve been struggling spiritually, I think that’s why I moved away from Jesus. But thanks to the Feast last Sunday. Thanks for restoring my faith. And I know step by step I’ll be healed and find my joy in HIm again. I’ll start by repentance, as you said, it’s to change. I know I should truly be repaired, and only Jesus can do that. I should reconcile with Him and reclaim my faith. I should start doing it, not just plan it out.
Truly, I believe that God wants me to be happy. Thank you again Bo. And above all, Thanks be to God. To all belongs all the glory. =D

Hi Bo,
I find joy when I sing in our choir. I enjoy the times when I practice and prepare for the singing. I am glad I am able to serve in our music ministry and serve God as well thru the gift of singing. I wish that God will bless me with more singing opportunities and I pray that I make Him happy too when I sing for Him.
Thanks and God bless you always!

My name’s Joy. Ring a bell?
My first joy list that I have been wanting to do is, 1) to spend my everyday loving and taking good care of my daughter.

So, i made a decision recently that soon she’ll be here with me. We’ll be together and won’t part again. I’m really determined to do my joy list no. 1. dear kuya Bo,,
actually im not a fun of reading inspirational books like what your publishing,,
but one moment of my life i became so depressed, lonely and i fell that im so selfish,,,
i do such thing for the benefit of me, never to think about the others,,
but definitely i learn about that mistake,,
im a christian, a member of Saint Madeline Sophie Foundation, here in montalban, im a youth volunteer,.
honestly, i was so depressed in that day after of what happen, or what i deed that night,
im on bahay madre, and we were having a plan for our service sunday for children in our community,,,
then because i was so depressed i cant concentrate of what im doing,, and since we were in the library in that time, there was a section their, an inspirational books,
then i started to look up on it, then until i saw your book,
“how to be really really really happy”
“you can make your life beautiful”
then their was a tiny voice says that’s what you need, then i started reading it, i was surprise when i find my self smiling while im reading your book “how be be really really happy”
to be honest i rally love “gods love a washing machine on overload”
and bugs bany for a while and donald duck
it was really cool…..
until i decided to borrow that book…
until now i still reading that book,,,
you know what i was so surprise to know that there was still a person like you that not afraid to tell about his weaknesses and about the mistake they done,,,
i want to be like you,,,,
i want to share my felling but then i was so ashamed to do that,,
definitely im afraid of rejection,,,
hahaha,, wierd??
ya maybe,,,,
now im realizing lot of thing about my self because of what i read in your book,,,
thanks kuya bo…. i love you so much…
hope to meet you,,,
