How a Taxi Driver Became a Bank President
It all started when my plane to Cebu was delayed by 5 hours.
While my fellow-passengers around were acting like enraged volcanoes spewing lava, cursing the catastrophe that befell upon us—I smiled and closed my eyes. Instantly, I felt peace. I whispered, “Lord, you have a special surprise in store for me.”
And in minutes, I discovered my gift.
That special surprise was Ray, a man who would bless me with his life. He also gave me key business ideas that would double my income.
He greeted me with a firm handshake and a friendly smile. “I watch you on TV,” he said, “and I text my family and friends to watch you.”
Like me, Ray’s flight to Mindanao was delayed for 8 hours. (All the flights that day were delayed. The airport looked like a refugee camp with people sitting on the floor and crowds begging for food from the airline personnel.)
I didn’t know why, but I sensed a connection with the man in front of me.
Later on, I discovered why.
As we found seats and ordered coffee, Ray shared with me the riveting story of his life. I was so swept away by his experience, I forgot all about my coffee.
“I went to Bible School and became a Pastor,” he said. “I pioneered a small church.” But after being a Pastor for 3 years, tragedy struck. His wife lost a baby boy in her pregnancy. The trial caused Ray to think about his family more.
“It’s lonely being a Pastor,” he explained. “The problems of my flock are all my problems. But my problems were only mine! So I asked my people to pastor their pastor too.” Slowly, he delegated his roles to his congregation as he felt a need to focus on his family—especially their financial needs.
His joined corporate life. For 6 years, he worked for a big company as their Regional Manager for the entire Mindanao (Southern region of the Philippines). He was earning P50,000 a month (US$1000+), a big sum during that time. But at the end of the day, he was still broke. In fact, he was in debt to the tune of P1.2 Million (US$26,000+)—including a warrant of arrest.
To survive and feed his children, the former Regional Manager became a Taxi Driver. It was an incredibly humbling experience. But he learned important lessons that would change his life forever.
Rey was now only earning P350 a day—a far cry from what he was earning before. But it was here where he learned how to manage his money.
It was here where he learned how to live within his means.
It was here where he learned how to save.
Ray said, “People like to manage what they don’t have. That’s why they’re poor. By borrowing for stuff they can’t afford. During that year as a Taxi Driver, I learned to manage what I had. And I was actually better off earning P350 a day than earning P50,000 a month! Because now, I learned to manage my money.”
After one year of being a Taxi driver, he borrowed enough money to buy cabs and became a Taxi Operator. But that was only a transitional step to learn how to run a business. His real goal was to be in the “money” business.
Ray wanted to own a bank.
So his first step was to work in a Rural Bank—without asking for a salary. He simply wanted to learn. And 3 years later, when he learned enough, Ray built his own Rural Bank.
Today, his Rural Bank is going strong. So far, after 7 years, the bank has given micro-loans to over a thousand people in his city, providing them with capital for their small businesses. And with 97% repayment efficiency! Because of this, his bank is transforming the lives of the poor. He teaches them the habits of saving, investing, and entrepreneurship.
Ray explained, “I ask people, ‘Do you want to prosper? What do you have? You may not have money. But you have time. Not just time, but time to learn. So use that! Join an insurance company and be an agent. Or join a company and sell their product. The important thing is to learn—and from there, branch out. Don’t get a job to earn money. Get a job to learn! And don’t start a business to earn money. Get into a business to learn! The money will follow.”
He continued, “Some people start a business and want to earn right away. But that’s not wise. Starting a business is like a slingshot. You have to pull back. That means clearing the way. Take time pulling back. Because when it’s time to release, you’ll be surprised that your business will rapidly shoot towards the target.”
Ray is a Serial Entrepreneur. At the back of his calling card is a list of his other businesses: a construction company, a property management company, salons, restaurants—plus a few more.
“I never manage my businesses,” he said, “I pass it on to people who can do a better job. I make them part owners. That’s why I can own many businesses.”
As Ray spoke, it was though I was hearing myself preach.
We both have the same beliefs about money.
We’re both Preachers that address the practical needs of people.
We’re both Serial Entrepreneurs.
And we both are fighting poverty by teaching three things to the Filipino: (1) a practical spirituality, (2) a more positive financial mindset, and (3) financial literacy.
Oh, one last thing: We both love our families.
At the airport, I met Ray’s lovely wife and beautiful daughter with him.
I sensed the happiness in his family. It was refreshing.
That day, my catastrophe turned out to be a rich blessing.
Not only for me, but everyone who’s reading this blog right now.
Talking to Ray made me realize more than ever before that we should never tell ourselves, “I’m stuck where I am. My life will never change.”
Keep dreaming my friend.
God has a wonderful plan for your life.
Pursue it with passion.
May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

continue to inspire us. that’s a major problem with most poor or rich - spending beyond their means. unfortunately it has become a part of their lifestyle.
my flight was also delayed for 7 hours with CP.

Hi Bo,
In spite of all the comments you may receive daily (which I’m sure you do and are swamped with…), let me take this little space to intrude in your gigantic site to say an honest, most heartfelt thank you.
I am a radio anchor for one of the country’s biggest networks, a television producer, a writer, a professional voice -over talent and a mother of two. Despite a sizable salary, lumped together with some professional fees, I was also, in June 2007, broke and deep in debt.
On a free trip (freeloading on my mother) to a posh country club in Batangas with my two kids and hubby, my mom handed me a book. She said, “Here. Bo Sanchez gave a talk for our org yesterday and I got you something.” It was 8 Secretsof the Truly Rich. Needless to say, it stayed on top of my luggage and wasforgotten until I got home. Now why did I mention the posh country club?Because it is so crucial in this story. There I was, swimming at the infinity pool with my kids with a mixed feeling of happiness and sulky bitterness. Happy, because I was splashing around in the pool with my kids, and bitter, beacuse I wanted to scream my head off at all the “rich” people whom I felt were pulling a fast one on me and living their greedy lives teeing off at the club.
I read your book when I got home to smoggy Manila, and I devoured it in one sitting.
Your book was truly a LIFE-OPENER. It opened me to the possibility of investing, getting rid of debt, saving the right way, of giving, dreaming, and the right attitude and ideas about being rich.
Fast forward to today, I’m glad to announce that I have zero debt (YIPEEEE!!!!), save 20% of my income, invested in funds, and I’m planning my first few steps in real estate investing (and I won’t stop at plan, I promise). I’ve still got a super long way to go, and it’s been tough, I’ve cried a bit a long the way, but it took a book and a very inspiring person to lead me to be truly rich. A person who has opened my eyes to giving, to God who loves us and wants us truly to live wealthy lives. Wealthy in the spiritual, emotional, and financial sense. I also have made a commitment to tithe, and I’d love to put in some to Anawim. How can I do that?
Anyway, thank you so much. And oh yeah, about the multimedia outfit or channel you’d like to put up? I’d love to partner with you, bounce around my ideas, and we’ll see. I’m not in broadcasting for nothing. : ) email me, let’s see!
God bless you, and may you continue to inspire and help people.
Autumn
God bless you Bo! This is just what i needed. Im starting a business with capital loaned from an angel investor. I attended your seminar back in 2005, we even talked a bit in the cr of the philam building in makati.
i learn alot from reading your books. i hope i can talk with you sometime on a personal level to share the blessings i have received from trying to be like you.
Many thanks! God bless you again.
Work to learn. Great business lesson for all.
God bless bro. bo.
your story is truly inspiring and I can relate. from earning 30K++, due to a series of unfortunate events, i had to quit work, move away. now i am just earning php350 a day. it is humbling and very hard. but honestly, i am learning, learning to save and prioritize my expenses, and tithe. sometimes, it is difficult to accept the reality of how hard my life is now, being a single parent and all. but this story made me realize more that God has plans for me. and i just need to keep a good attitude while waiting for God’s plan to unfold.

i had the chance to work abroad but i wasn’t able to save anything. it was only in april 2008, after attending your 8 secrets of the truly rich seminar in jakarta, indonesia that i realized that i should be thinking of my future. now i’m back here in manila. God has blessed me with a high paying job.
i worked for 10 years but i wasn’t able to save.
this time, i am going to put into practice everything you have in your book. i’ll be buying stocks next month
and i am also talking to people with background on mutual fund (wanna learn more). I am also volunteering to teach children who cannot afford to be in school.
thank you for inspiring us Ray and Bo!
Praise God!
Indeed, another inspiring article to make our life meaningful and leave a legacy.GET A JOB TO LEARN…MONEY FOLLOWS…SO WE CAN HELP MORE!
Cheers!
A timely article. Because at this point in time I’m contemplating on stopping my very small business, selling anything that my officemates and friends need, due to a bad experience. A year ago nagtiwala ako sa isang friend because at the start she was a good customer but up to now no payment was made for the goods worth 4,000+ she got.
Hi Kuya,
What a nice story indeed! Thanks for sharing it with us alwayz.
WOW…Salamat…salamat..salamat….gumaan…gumanda ang mundo ko dahil sa inyo..PAG-ASA! PAG-ASA! yan ang nakikita ko…SALAMAT!
tnx bro. bo for this another inspiring story… im a business course graduate and i want to use all my learnings from school but as i entered my first job in a chamber of commerce i realized that my learnings are far behind from the reality of the corporate world… i\’v seen how business people face problems of not only about their businesses but of how to contribute to the society… and i can really say that business should not be about working with people but working with and FOR the people… its really nice seeing and knowing people who have went through hardships before getting to where they are now… i took business course so i can put up my own business someday, and as of now i am contented of where i am starting to learn… my job now lets me appreciate and see that its not about how much you earn that matters…after all its about the things you get out of the experiences and the reality you will encounter… it will be such an inspiration if you will know that your boss, a big time and prominent businessman had used to work being an ordinary employee before getting into the bigger picture of owning companies… and providing jobs to many people…. God bless!

Hi Bro. Bo
Thank you for this beautiful insight. A lot of employees get burned out of their work because they get stuck into it. Yes, you are right that we work to learn and learn and not just to wait for the paydays. What is important is we get new insights everyday from our colleagues, clients and the structure of the work.
God bless you and thank you!
hi kuya bo,

truly. wonderfully. inspiring.
i’ve been so down this week, actually, on the verge of giving up on a certain dream of mine… but then, this blog entry came along. (i’ve seen that there are always bumps and potholes along the way, but it must not [and never] stop you from reaching your dreams - minsan nga yung bumps at potholes pa ang nagiging daan para ‘matagpuan’ mo yung dream mo… ^_~)…
mabuhay to you bro.bo and bro.ray!
in parting, i’ve just recently read this message in one of og mandino’s books; some words of wisdom from Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr during a commencement exercise;
” Nothing that is worth doing can be accomplished in your lifetime; therefore you will have to be saved by hope. Nothing that is beautiful will make sense in the immediate instance; therefore, you must be saved by faith. Nothing that is worth doing can be done alone, but has to be done with others; therefore you must be saved by love.”
*i read this awhile ago… and it just kinda stuck. ^_^
that was a refreshing for real, i felt the same.
Thanks for such inspiring words on my very special day..i also attended the kerygma fest here in Iloilo and am so happy i attended it!very inspiring indeed!God bless!:)
thanks for that inspiring article.
true enough we should not focus on money everytime. we should use our own resources, those things that we already have and be happy with it.
big things starts in small ones, right?
All we have to do is to always trust God and let Him lead the way.
Praise to Jesus and Mary!

thank you very bro!
Hi Bo,
Great story. Still remember me? We used to be neighbours in Jackielouville. I’m with the Aussie missionaries. I live now in Pemberton Western Australia. You have inspired me with your financial books. I’ll be investing in the stock market, do internet marketing and do property options in a span of one year. God has been good to me. I have a lovely wife and we are expecting a baby in February. I still have my heart for the street children in the Philippines and plan to open up houses in major city. God bless your work Bo.
Dear Bo:
Since I started reading your article (whatever they call them) life has changed. And in August I wrote to you, if you could be our speaker in one of the hospital’s (where used to work as a Staff Nurse cum HRD Consultant) but to no avail, you were on an earlier scheduled out of town speaking engagement, according to your Secretary, Chelle. I got disappointed at that time. ‘Know why? My eagerness to let so many people in the Hospital, to hear your inspiring works won’t come true. I’ ve been very active in organizing seminar/lecture or any events that could improve the lives of the people there, because, to my mind they are like “robots” who just work and work and give little attention to feed their minds,souls/life of life important lessons or values.
Hope I could be a part of your ministry. By the way, I am a Psychologist (my first course) and a Registered Nurse (in the Philippines). I have just resigned from work, and now continuing my hospice volunteer work for cancer patients in one of the Hospice in Alabang. Please email me, if I would fit in your gigantic institution. Thanks. More power! Ms. Willing
wow…this is truly inspiring…thanks a lot, Bro. Bo, for sharing this great story…God Bless!!!
Hi Bo!
I always read your articles like this and I have become a fan. Like Rey, I have been working for so many years now with a salary na masasabi kong way above the average but my debts is stil the same as 10 years ago or nadagdagan pa yata,my problem is i really dont know how to manage my finances.
What happened to the spiritual life of Rey? Iniwan ba nya ang pagiging Pastor and go into business? If that’s the case then medyo malungkot din yon di ba? Minsan din too much money will make you drift away from god, dont get me wrong, I too want to have enough money. Sana kahit na ganon na karami ang pera ni Rey, nagagamit pa rin sya sa mga ministries.
God Bless.
I just read this and it is so appropriate with this blog.
“By believing that God keeps His promises, we will become stronger in our faith and more at peace. Hardships that once would have thrown us off course will lose their power to shake us. Hope will replace discouragement, and trust will overcome doubt. Each time trouble comes, focus your attention upon your loving heavenly Father and His ability to care for you.
Through His Spirit and the Word, we start to see things as the Father does and learn what pleases Him. “
dear bro bo. truly inspiring. thank you for all the stories you mailed to me. appreciated. thank you very much. GOD bless.
Thanks Bro. Bo for the inspiration always. Everytime i read your stories i am so engrossed that i almost feel your enthusiasm as you relate your story. I am an ordinary admin assistant earning about 10,000 pesos in a month net. As I read Ray’s story I am deeply touched and at the same time inspired that maybe I can talk to Him or either to you Bro. Bo so both of you can be my mentors.
I really wanted to have more than enough so I can share my blessings to the poorest of the poor and be a blessing to the world.
If I may borrow Bro. Bo’s quote “You cannot give what you do not have, we should have an emotional why to reach such dreams and desires. So, I ask God’s grace and guidance that He will send human angels and super natural angels to show me the way to fulfill such desires.
Miracles do happen I know one day I will be rich and debt free by that day I will bless the world in Jesus name. Amen….amen

brother Bo,
I see your book every time I enter National Bookstore and saw it only as one of the “get rich books”. I was lucky to be given a copy from my teacher (very kind and pretty) as an award and was really surprised by the content. I have to say Thank You for writing the book and including the importance of spirituality too.
Also, thanks to the cutest teacher who gave me the book
thanks for sharing Brother Bo
[…] How a Taxi Driver Became a Bank President It all started when my plane to Cebu was delayed by 5 hours. […]
thanks for sharing your stories brother bo, how i wish we could meet someday.
This is what i am going thru right now…
I am married with 3 kids. Ive been working for about 15 years now. Before, i let my wife handle the bugdeting.
I lost my job Last year, i was jobless for 3 months. All my savings were emptied plus debt of about P50k. This is already big for me.
I found a job a month before Christmas. Though my basic pay now is higher than i was receiving, my take home pay becomes lower…..
In my previous job, we receive ot pay + profit sharing at the end of the year + allowances.
So i end up controlling our daily expenses to make our money last till the next payday.
I know God is with us. He will provide us our daily needs.
