10 Habits To A Healthy Body

Your future will be defined by your habits.

I’m ready to die anytime—right this minute if necessary. (I hope my wife isn’t reading this, because she hates it when I start talking this way.) My soul is prepared to go home to God at any moment.

But I also want to prepare for a long and healthy life—and that’s so possible. My father passed away when he was 88. And my Mom is going strong at 83. Studies show that the life span of human beings is getting longer. Babies born today have an average life span of 101 years old.

But hey, I don’t want to be lying down in bed when I hit 90! That’s the last thing I want to do. I want to be 90 and still be preaching around the world! And still be making love to my spouse. (Okay, I want my wife to read that one.)

By the way, your comments in my last Blog were very inspiring!

Here are my 10 Habits To A Healthy Body:

1.     Move!

I already mentioned that each morning, I do simple stretching and breathing Tai Chi movements—and pray to Jesus too—for 30 minutes. I also cycle for an hour on my stationary bike, all the while reading 5 chapters of the Bible and other spiritual books, or writing my journal in my laptop (See photo above).   I also do a few pushups, sit-ups, and chin-ups. I’ll never win Mr. Universe, but it’s enough to tone my muscles. I learned that when we hit 50, we start losing 1.5% of our muscle strength every year. This is the reason why you see a lot of 60-year-old people who are very weak today—because they didn’t move their body. So walk. Swim. Play badminton. Move!

2.     Eat The Best Kinds Of Food

More than fourteen years ago, I stopped eating beef, pork, and chicken. Seven years ago, I also gave up crabs and shrimps. So my diet consists of fish and vegetables. At home, we eat organic brown rice and wheat bread. We also fry with soya oil. (Olive oil is too expensive.)

The Old Testament called certain foods unclean—like pork, crustaceans, shells, fish without scales—and modern science has found out that many of these foods have higher toxicity. Pork has more toxins than other meats. Crustaceans and shells are the scavengers of the sea. And because fish release their toxins through their scales, fish without scales have slightly more toxins. I’m not saying you shouldn’t eat these delicious food, but perhaps minimize them in your diet.

          3.   Juice Your Vegetables

Every morning, I drink fresh vegetable juice. I throw into my Juicer four large carrots, one long celery stick, and one apple. The advantage of juicing? By juicing, I’m able to consume 4 large carrots in two minutes flat—something that would take me one hour if I munched them. As I drink my juice every morning, I picture God nourishing me in every part of my body. It works!

          4.   Supplement

I’m a firm believer in taking supplements. I take a mega dose of vitamin C, fish oil (Omega 3), and other multi-vitamins. I also take a list of supplements too long to mention here. (One of these days, I’ll give you their names.) Before I drink them, I bless them.  So they contain a double punch!

          5.   Sleep Like A Babe

I usually dose off at 11:30pm and wake up at 6:00am. Six and a half hours is enough for me. If I feel a need to take a quick afternoon nap, I do it. I try to listen to my body. Praying before you sleep is fantastic because you’re able to surrender all your worries to God. So before I sleep, I do 20 minutes of my simple Tai Chi exercises again—as I surrender to Jesus all my stress. When I do this, I sleep like a babe.

          6.   Drink Enough

The first thing I do when I wake up is drink a glass of room temperature water. As I drink it, I ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse me. After my exercise, I drink my carrot juice. Here’s what I found out: For many of us, what we think are hunger pangs may just be our thirst. So when you feel hungry, drink water first. And eat water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

          7.   Work With Passion

Get into something your love to do. When you enjoy your work, it isn’t work. It’s play. And that keeps your body humming. If you can see your job as a sacred mission from God, you wake up in the morning with joy and excitement. Your body gets the message: “I need you to be healthy, because I’m here to bless the world.” (I have a TrulyRich Club where I coach people in their finances and work. To join, log on at www.TrulyRichClub.com now.)

          8.   Feel Your Feelings

Our bodies are simply the blueprints of our emotions. When we get sick in our bodies, many times, it’s simply manifesting our stress, our fears, our anxiety, and our unresolved angers. I strongly urge you to become aware of your emotions and bring them constantly to the Lord. Before Him, work through them. Feel them, yes. Respect your emotions, yes. But lay them at His feet and follow God only.

9.     Be Happy

Be a positive person. If you’re a child of God, how can you not think positive? If you believe that “all things work for good to those who love God”, how can you not rejoice even in your problems? Happy people are generally healthier than unhappy people.

10.            Love Well

What keeps me healthy? I play with my kids on the floor everyday. (I call it “floor time”.) Each week, I date my wife and hold hands often. And I have fantastic friends! (By the way, wherever you are in the world, join my FREE virtual community and sign up at www.KerygmaFamily.com

Once upon a time, an Elderly home had a very high death rate: One resident died each month. But one day, a volunteer came and started social activities among the old people. As the old people engaged with each other in conversation, the mortality rate plunged dramatically almost overnight. Just being in relationships will make you healthier. Imagine how healthy you will be if those relationships are deep and loving?

  1. Yes Bo! Thanks for sharing the 10 habits… I thought you’ll recommend us to build a stationary bike with a laptop stand - like the one you have in the picture… hehe…

    Merry Christmas and God bless..

    Jan Silan

  2. Dear Bo, as always, you have inspired me again, especially with that picture of your customized stationary bicycle. My jaw dropped in awe, no kidding! I would also like to let you know that with God’s grace, and with a firm decision that I want to become healthy for my family’s sake, I was able to conquer hypertension and fatty liver. With your 10 habits to a healthy body, I’m sure it would be a cinch to stay healthy for my loved ones. Thanks!

  3. Hi Bro Bo!

Thanks for sharing the 10 Habits To A Healthy Body. It really inspired me.

I realized that eventhough I’m thinking that I am already doing the right things (specifically in choosing the right food to eat), seems I still I haven’t. From now on, I need toreligiously say “no to meat” and minimize the crustaceans.

I agree, I need to be active again. Better to have a weekly schedule of physical activities such as badminton or swimming.

With regards to be a positive thinker, that’s my observation too…a positive or optimist person is healthier than a pessimist one.

Once again, thank you Bro Bo!

Happy Christmas and have a more blissful year of 2009!

  4. Hello, Bo! Thank you very much for sharing these 10 habits! I’ll let my Mommy and Kuya read this. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!!! =))

  8. Hi Bro. Bo,

Thanks for the tips. I wish I can drink carrot juice…( I will include it as one of my new years resolution).

I believe in what you’ve said that being happy and prayerful are one of the factors of having a healthy life.

I also believe that giving simple gifts, kind words, and send greetings to long lost friends are one way of celebrating a healthy christmas.

    Merry Christmas.

  9. Those are fantastic tips Bo. But let me add one more habit that focuses on maintaining ‘mental health’ - Engage in mental activities during leisure time - read books (spiritual, inspirational), solve crossword puzzles, play sudoku, chess, etc., or just about anything to engage one’s mind because a study shows that those who do these things are less likely to develop Alzheimer disease later on in life.

    Just a thought. God bless.

  10. Thanks for the tips, Brother Bo. But one thing bothers me. You do 20 minutes taiji or taichi exercises before you go to sleep? I may not be an expert but doing so might be contradictory. I used to do that to until I felt different. My teacher told me that taiji would increase your circulation and sleep would slow it down. So doing taiji would cause your blood to speed up only to immediately slow it down by sleeping. I am no expert but , please check if you start feeling different. Thanks and more power to you.

  21. Hi Bo
Yes i agree with everything you say. its good that you mention this i been telling this for years to my siblings now they may believe me hey…I was amazed on your comments about dying today, just adding if i go i go with the words …” wow what a ride” i haven’t missed much but really i want to do a lot more and besides i have a 4year old so i just got to be here hey. Yes yes again i want to change the world or at least the little suburb i live in on the Gold Coast, and i will no matter what i will bring this way of celebrating the Feast into our church,Maybe i need your help.
Thank you once more for you very inspiring words of wisdom and by hitting the nail right on the head every time like you said burn the boats i am about to burn them, no more just in case, looking forward only.
    Love to hearing from you

    Sincerely

    Eddie

  22. Dear Bro. Bo,

Thank you for constantly reminding us not only for our health but also for our wealth. I will really follow your health reminders. These rituals always need accompanying prayers. Without prayers these are nothing.

Just as my friend who was health conscious died in an accident. So, everything became useless without prayers.

I salute you, Bro. Bo. You always do it with God on your side.

    lorie

  24. Merry Christmas to all!
I think carrot juice tastes really good! It’s fragrant, and if you still don’t like how it tastes, you can mix it with another fruit you like, such as apple or orange. The combination of carrot plus another fruit usually results in a juice whose flavor takes on whatever you mix carrot with. (Though I don’t think it mixes well with banana, avocado, or other creamy fruits).

  25. Thanks Bro Bo.. =)

God bless you and your family..

Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year.. ^^,

  26. Merry Xmas Bro Bo

I was enlightened when i read this article 10 habits to a healthy lifestyle .
So these days during crisis , financial crisis , depression due to unemployment Maybe its time to change a daily routine. As of now im jobless and the company i worked with declared bankruptcy and cant even recive my last salary and 13th month pay I am 40 years old . of course its natural to feel afraid that some companies would not accept me because of my age. But reading this article . I understand how the boss feels specially if they cant afford to pay us and have the option to cease our employment with them. Instead of fighting and go to DOLE during this season i spent my time in silence and had completed nine days simbang gabi . Little by little i know understand how God works in this situation and the good news is this article and i have time now to reflect and have a decision to change my routine and lifestyle Good thing before itake a medicine or a supplement i have to pray for them and even the food i prepare should also ask God to bless them in order to have more benefits
Thnak you very much for the inspirig article I am not afraid to old Age because God will provide security .

  27. Happy Holidays!!!

Bro. Bo thanks for posting that pic, i remember i asked you in your previous blog to have it shared with us. Although it looked differently from what i’ve imagined.

  35. hi BO,

thank u for posting the 10 healthy body habits, i will look forward to do it. i knew it really helps me physically and spiritually.

    god bless u always!

  36. kuya bo,

your stationary bike with a desk is so cool!

i especially liked your number 8. emotions do manifest in our body especially when we’re overly stressed.

the greatest thing i’ve learned is to listen to my body. it is very direct in demanding what it wants (i.e. you get sick when it’s dying to get some rest). sometimes we are just to insensitive to our needs that’s why i’m putting “listen to my body’s needs” on top of my new year’s resolution list. :D

merry christmas and advance happy new year to everyone!

  37. brother Bo’,

praise God…your “good health” tips is just in time for the season…God bless your ministry!

am blessed to have logged on to your website.

a “Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous New Yeaf”
to you, your folks and all the kerygma staff.

  38. yes bro.

Thanks a lot.It is a big help to my priestly formation.wishing you always with good health.

  39. THANKS FOR THE TEN TIPS, BO! They’re definitely something to “munch” during the Christmas break.

I am particularly hit by Tip #1, bull’s eye :) Oh yeah, I’ll be turning 40 too when 2009 enters, and I’ve gotta … MOVE!

Tip #2 also hit me. There were parties here and there this Christmas, and … well … I’ve got to work more on avoiding pork and beef hehe

It was great to see you during the CFA Party on Dec 19!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

  40. I love this article! I always wanted to be fit. In fact, i really want to try to become vegetarian however with the kind of foods the family is preparing it is really difficult to stay away from eating pork, beef, chicken etc. But i believe it is just a matter of self discipline and self control. Losing weight is actually one of my new year’s resolution.
I hope next time, Bro Bo, you give us insight how to save despite of the global crisis, for instance you are just leaving paycheck to paycheck but you still want to save.. it is actually very hard to keep some money these day so if you can give us some help on how to save money that will help me a lot. Thank you. Happy New Year! May this year be a blessing for everyone!

  41. Hi Tito Bo!
Thanks for continously inspiring people, I may be too young for serious talks but I really loved it when you inspire other people (which eventually inspires me too).
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, and to your family. May God bless this 2009 to come, AMEN!

  42. Hi Brother Bo!

I love reading your write ups.
I believe also in natural ways of making our body healthier. Although I don’t agree much on the supplements. I believe if we take a healthy diet based on the food pyramid we won’t need those supplements. Supplements harm our liver too.
Sorry to contradict. I’m a RND that’s why I want to share my thoughts with regards to supplements too.

More power brother. I always long for your weekly creations. Something to inspire me.

  43. Hi brother Bo,

before I cannot imagine the stationary bike with laptop on it as I was reading your previous article, but now I am really amazed when I saw the picture. manufacturers might create a customized stationary bike with flat form on it.

Yes I will imitate your lifestyle from now on and next year I will buy my stationary bike.

Godbless and thanks for your inspiring article

  44. Hi, Bo! :) I really enjoy reading your blogs. Thanks for the 10 very practical tips you shared here. My first reaction when I saw your picture with that stationary bike while reading on your laptop was I LAUGHED MY HEART OUT. Hahahah!!! That’s what I do often by the way. ;)

I was seated while reading the article. But when I got to Tip #1, I stood up and started moving, stretching my body while continuing reading. Hahahah!!! An automatic application, ey? :)

On eating the best kinds of food. About 2 years ago, I gave up eating meat and went on a seafoods, fruits and vegetable diet. But after a year of doing so, I got back to eating meat again. Someone told me I needed meat for protein, to strengthen my body, coz I have scoliosis. Perhaps, it’s really not meat that I need, but more exercise and a healthier diet.

I really admire you, Bo. :) I hope I could live up to my New Year’s Resolution of having a heathier lifestyle. My friend and I are betting on having nice abs for 2009. Hahahahah!!! Good luck to us!

Cheers to a better life! Happy New Year to you and your family, Bo! :)

  45. Blessings from New York!!
The kids are down in Time Square for the pre- New year’s Eve celebration, but with wind chills below freezing, decided to stay inside and check the emails.
Thanks for the healthy reminders, went right to the refrigerator for my glass of carrot juice instead of the second cup of coffee I was about to make.

  46. hi bo,

Thank you for this article! what a great way to start the year. I am also a firm believer of food supplements… because now a days the food we eat is not enough, we are not even sure if those are still healthy. Taking food supplements boost our immune system and it helps our body respond better with the prescription drugs.

FYI I take Alive Mega-nutritionals… IF you want to try this one– a complete formulation made by Nature’s way, you can reach me at 09228524272. thank you.

  47. dear bro. bo,
thanks you for your spirit-filled writings. It became my daily guide as I go through life. It opened my mind and soul. Helps me also take care of my body. God bless you

  49. hi..happy new year brother bo..i had just returned from my hometown..i wasn’t able to check my emails there due to busy sked and bonding moments with friends and family.. i’m so glad to have read your article..i have always been health-conscious..and it’s so nice to learn more health tips from you..thank you so much…

  50. Hi Bro.Bo!
I am really entertained reading your article. I am inspired to follow your simple and practical habits. I should learn and practice those. I have not been health conscious these years and as I recall, I am practically living in unhealthy habits (I’m not a hard drinker or smoker though)…Many thanks once again for your wonderful thoughts! You’re heaven sent!

  51. Lovely pic! You know, that is actually a good idea - exercising while surfing the net or blogging.

You know, we constantly remind ourselves with the tips that you have mentioned above. The only reason why we fail to take care of ourselves is because we lack the discipline to do so. I keep telling myself that in order to reach a goal, you have to press on and not give up.

In matters like being physically fit, it deals a lot of discipline - on diet, exercise, and even sleep! I constantly remind myself that if I do not have the discipline, I won’t be able to have a healthier body.

Kudos to you and God bless you! 2009 will be a great year. ^_^

  52. you are truly a blessing from HIM… he has again spoken to me through your article…have a blessed, healthy many many years to all of us!

  53. hello bro. bo!

aside from that eye-opener tips for a 57-year old woman, I had a hearty laugh, too. i find you funny, inspiring, Godly, etc, etc. thank you so much. God bless us all!

  54. Wow Bro Bo,
Praise the Lord for that! if it works for you, i beleive it will also do for me,….thanks for sharing!,…wish to take off my eyeglass too sooner… hey havent you wearing contact lens, or unerwent a laser eye treatment huh? of course u wouldnt,… just thought of asking.. thanks & keep posting. i will strongly follow this 10 habits to obtain healthy body… as this is the tepmple of God. amen! : )

  55. Dear Bo,

As always, you are truly inspiring a lot of people and that includes me. Keep up the good work.

  56. hi! — for me, healthy body comes from peace of mind and spirit. i mean, life free from guilt and sin. from there , a healthy mind, body and spirit grows. ” With joy we shall draw waters, from the springs of endless love ; from the Living well of God…” striving to live a life attuned to Jesus’ gospel , rising from every fall with God’s grace in His Sacraments brings peace and joy to life.
thanks bro. bo for this space. from my family to all, God bless!

  57. Dear Bro. Bo,

I agree with Miles above. Don’t rely too much on supplements. Supplements are useless if you have a balanced diet. They have very low absorbability around 10-15% only and the rest will be excreted in your urine. This makes your urine very expensive. If a capsule or pill costs P10, only P1 or P1.50 will be absorbed and the remaining P8.50 is flushed down in the toilet. Imagine how many supplements you’re taking each day or each meal. Hope this helps. God bless!

  62. Hi Brother Bo,

Ive been searching for homepage in the internet where i can get an information to cure my gout which have haunted me for over 2 years (with daily pain)..

The medicine the doctors have given me like alluporinol and etc have worsened it further… …and its expensive too..

i come to your homepage and expiremented on your carrot, celery, apple formula….plus of course…. praying to God that i will be cured with this while blending the juices… presto…. ive been using this for month now and my gout pain did not recur again…. I believe your formula have detoxified me ……..and neutralize my uric acids………..ill have my blood check up next month… ill check if my uric acid is going back to normal

But from the non recurrence of its symptom… i believe im on my way to recovery and cure..

Ive done a little modification to the formula…. 1 big carrot, 1 medium apple, 4-8 sticks of organically grown celery ( from Eden Farm in Davao, that ive bought from SM), ………ive incorporated 1 teaspoon of cinnamon power ( ive read from internet that it cures gout)…………. sometimes i add 2-4 banana……plus 2 glass of water….. it makes 4 glass of juice………… so i drink 2 glass in the morning and two glass in the evening……….

Its good to share this to other gout sufferers too…

Maybe you can write a full article to this so we can also help other gout sufferers to experience comfort of walking normally again…

    god bless you.

    Thanks

    2. Gargle (mumog) napapanis po ang laway (sali-virus)
    3. Wag po muna uminom ng Coffee,Choco, milk or tea..(Acid base po sila lahat, once n uminom po tyo agad ng di muna umiinom ng water yung Ph level ng katawan ntin tataas and the whole day acidic n tyo..pag ganun po..mas prone n tyo sa virus..Kya Step4 muna)
    4. Drink 3-4 glasses of water (not cold and not hot)
5.3-4x Inhale/Exhale ( Hinga po ng malalim then yung pag exhale dpat isigaw po kc there’s a tension inside)
    6. 5mins Full Body Sweating…

    Thanks!
    Gino, Pasay City

  64. Good Morning Bro. Bo!

    High in Uric Acid:

Bro.
    Hosea 4:6
“My people perish because of lack of knowledge”
“Ang sangkatauhan ay napapahamak dahil sa kakulangan ng kaalaman”
    God bless po!

Just in case yung iba po na nakakabasa ng blog nyo po ay may question sa mga sinasabi ko…I will leave my facebook email..Wag nyo po ako aawayin ah..Peace po!^^
